Intensive research in stem cell therapy

For decades, scientists all over the world have agreed on the beneficial effects of stem cells in our bodies. Stem cell research has been successful first in mice and later in clinical studies on patients. The corresponding literature is currently increasing daily.

What is stem cell therapy?

Our body has hundreds of different cell types, each with specific functions such as muscle cells, nerve cells and organic cells. If cells are destroyed or die due to aging, the local stem cells are activated.

Stem cells are a type of cell that can reproduce itself after activation and differentiate into different cell types. In addition, they can positively influence their environment and the communication of neighboring cell types. They can therefore repair, regenerate, and contribute to the formation of new vessels and have a strong anti-inflammatory effect.
Stem cell therapy is a modern and particularly effective form of treatment in which the body’s own stem cells are used in regions of the body that are diseased or whose stock of its own stem cells is reduced.
The success of this stem cell therapy is based on the ability of stem cells to inhibit inflammation and thus enable regeneration.
This is why arthrosis, muscle and tendon injuries, joint diseases and wound healing disorders with severe inflammation react particularly well to this form of treatment.

Wie läuft eine Stammzellentherapie ab?

Prof. Schoettle not only extracts regenerative cells here in Munich, but also in London, Zurich or on Okyanos almost exclusively from fat tissue, which is obtained by liposuction.
Reasons and advantages are obvious:

  1. fat tissue has the highest proportion of mesenchymal stem cells compared to bone marrow and other donor regions..
  2. The removal of fatty tissue from the abdomen, thighs or buttocks has also been standardized in Munich for decades, without complications, at low risk, quickly and on an outpatient basis.
  3. the patient has only few postoperative problems and well controllable pain.

The first step is to find the right indication for a stem cell therapy based on a detailed anamnesis and a precise examination with evaluation of MRI images here in Munich. Embryonic stem cells are the first cells that are formed directly after the fusion of egg and sperm. Embryonic stem cells grow very quickly and can develop into a large number of body cells. Since the derivation of these stem cells has to be seen critically from an ethical point of view for a very good reason, they have no significance in clinical application, but are irreplaceable for research.

UMBILICAL CORD STEM CELLS are stem cells from umbilical cord blood and cord tissue. Since these are stem cells after / at birth, these are also adult stem cells, i.e. they cannot be more or less active / powerful than the stem cells that are obtained at a later point in time. They are mainly used for the treatment of diseases in the haematopoietic system, as they mainly contain haematopoietic stem cells – meaning  blood cell creating stem cells.

Their content of mesenchymal stem cells, which are used to treat typical degenerations of the skin, cartilage, muscles, bones, etc., is comparatively low. Therefore, they are not necessarily suitable for use in orthopaedics,  skin care or  other regenerative fields.

Adult stem cells have already taken a step towards specialisation and can only become certain cell types. Adult stem cells are present in the human body after birth and are responsible for regenerative processes in various tissues and organs. They are present everywhere in the organism to replace damaged or dead cells.

As the local stem cells decrease over the course of life, a young person recovers faster as the process slows down as age increases.

When Prof. Schoettle talks about stem cell therapy in Munich, he is always referring to adult mesenchymal stem cells processed from body fat.

Mesenchymal stem cells are a special form of adult stem cells.

They can be isolated from various tissues, with the highest proportion of mesenchymal stem cells in the fatty tissue.
Mesenchymal stem cells have a high differentiation potential, i.e. they can mature into different cell types. They have a strong anti-inflammatory effect and have a regenerative effect on tendons, ligaments, muscles and cartilage. Stem cells are used when tissue damage or inflammation is present. Stem cells are responsible for the regeneration and repair of body tissues so that body cells such as connective tissue, cartilage, tendons, heart, nerves and skin are regularly renewed and repaired.
