In 2004, long before the MPFL reconstruction was internationally recognized as “state of the art” surgery for the treatment of knee-cap instability, Prof. Dr. med. Schoettle was able to provide biomechanical proof of the effect of this band as part of his PhD thesis. It turned out, however, that the key point of this procedure is the correct placement of the ligament at the femoral insertion site. He succeeded in identifying and publishing the correct point for intraoperative use by means of various investigations. Soon after, this area was named “Schoettle Point” and became standard knowledge in orthopaedic textbooks all over the world. Accordingly it is included in the questionnaire for the orthopaedic specialist examination.
